History of Dodge Charger 1966 - 1970

Dodge Charger was born in 1966. First-generation (now its already 7th generation of Dodge Charger) went out on market in 1966-1967 years. Chrysler in the beginning of the 1960s had awful car designs but managed to release Plymouth Barracuda 16 days earlier than Ford Mustang and became the first fastback car on the market. Dodge Charger 1966 is a redesign of the Dodge Coronet 500 model plus a fastback design.
Dodge Charger was a pretty huge and heavy car but its Hemi 426 V8 engine gave some advantages (Dodge Charger won 18 races in Nascar in 1966). In the first year 37K Dodge Chargers were sold but less than 500 with Hemi engine. Next year sales drastically dropped to 15K (with around only 100 with Hemi engine) but eventually, 2nd generation of Dodge Charger was on its way to the market.
2nd generation was produced in the 1968-1970 years. And this Dodge Charger is a Charger from Bullit movie and this model completely associated with Dodge Charger. What made 2nd generation of Dodge Charger the best? Its awesome design. It's the best design that ever was made by Chrysler. It was not just beautiful, it was just perfect! But apart from design, everything from a technical point of view was the same as 1st generation models. Almost 100K cars of this model were sold but again just 500 models with beasty Hemi engine. The 1969 year model was almost the same as 1968 except front and rear light design. There is an ongoing holy war among Dodge Charger fans which model has the best design 1968 or 1969, but 1969 is said to be the best Dodge Charger model ever. The worse thing about this model was the 149 horsepower engine in the range of available engines. But only 500 people got into this marketing trap with less price and less powerful engine. Another problem with the car claiming to be a road warrior was a lack of aerodynamics.
Designers of Chrysler decided to fight this with an absolutely absurd in means of design model - 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona with noticeable front-rear parts. It was the first model to break a 320 km/h speed record. 503 cars of this model were sent to the market. In the 1969 year 86K of Dodge Chargers were produced and in the final 1970 year for this 2nd generation of Dodge Charger 49K cars were produced. To be continued...
